Doris Lula Metcalf Porche was born March 8, 1933 in the Upper Laurel Section of Madison County to Dosser and Bonnie English Metcalf. Her maternal Grandparents were Fate and Lula Shook English and her paternal Grandparents were Wiley and Laura Click Metcalf, originally from Tennessee. She had four brothers, R.D., who still resides in Madison County; Kelly, from Concord, NC; Ellis who died in 1972; and Vaughn who died in 1992. In addition there were three sisters, June Robinson Orr who died in 1987; Theda "Teddi" Kiser, who lives in Maiden, NC; and Sharon Metcalf, who lives near Hickory, NC. My mother was the eldest girl and second eldest child in the family. She and my uncle, R.D. have been the rocks of the family, through many losses and and quite a few gains (children and grandchildren).
My mother was a strong woman and faced much adversity, but came out ahead. After the death of my father in 1983, she remarried, to Jerry Fletcher, who died in 2003, two years before she did. Within two years of her death, my brother, Roger Dale Porche went to be with her and my father. Surviving are five children: Mardi Max Porche, Linda Farmer, Deonne Reese-myself, Michael Porche, and Debra Jones.
We all Love and Miss her Greatly.
