WALTER 'WALLY' SLACK

Walter 'Wally' Slack, a devoted father to Terry (Barry) Cupples, Kim (Brian) Nopens, and Brett Slack died November 19, 2003, in Kennewick at Hospice House surrounded by his family.

Wally was born July 24, 1923, in Greensboro, North Carolina, to Herbert and Opie Slack.

He was a decorated WWII veteran (15th Army Air Force, 460th Bomb Group, 762nd Bomb Squad, Arnold Elschlepp crew], who flew 33 combat missions and walked 743 miles through enemy territory in 43 days after his bomber was shot down.
Wally was awarded 4 Bronze Stars, the Purple Heart, Silver Star, Air Metal with 1 Oak Cluster, Good Conduct Service Ribbon, and a Unit Citation Badge for his courageous trek.

While in Spokane being treated for the burns he received during the war, he met his wife Evelyn Slack. Wally and Evy were married on September 7, 1945.

While in Spokane, Wally attended Gonzaga University and then he transferred to Washington State University. Wally also attended school at Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina, for a short period of time. Education was an important factor to Wally, who always prodded his family to 'go back to school.'
Long remembered as an 'Idea Man' his inventions included several patents, always holding true to his personal belief that he instilled in all who knew him which was to use your imagination, and never accept the words, 'Can't Be Done.'

Every time we would have an idea for a new product/invention he would say, 'Let's go for it!'

For more than 30 years, he owned Appliance Guardian at the Richland a place where everyone knew Wally, bought appliance parts, and had their appliances repaired.

Grandpa loved frogs and enjoyed playing the lottery, horse races, reading the newspaper, and watching Fox News. He was an avid sportsman who loved hunting and fishing.

But by far, the love of his life was his family. Missing him deeply are his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who include Chandra/ Shane Markel, Chiara (Marchia and Chimara) Cupples, Nikki Nopens, Brett/ Shawna (Dominique and Jessica) Slack, Amber/Charles (Nicole) Moniz, Deanna/ Josh (Matthew, Jared and Lexi) Stancil, and Tara/Shay Stearns. Wally is also survived by his former daughter-in-law, Theresa Slack, and his three sisters, Irma Lee Gravitt, Estelle Chambers, and Ruby Lambert.

Preceding him in death are his parents and his wife, Evelyn Slack.

A private family service with Military Honors will be conducted at a later date.

The family would like to acknowledge Kim, Wally's daughter for the unconditional love and care she gave to Grandpa when he was at his best and when he was sick. Kim, without you it would not have been possible. Grandpa appreciated you and loved you more than you know. As Grandpa would say, you were always so 'nice' to him. He knew we were there ... he always knew.
Words cannot express the family's sorrow. Wally was our Hero and his legacy will forever carry on in our hearts. He was loved... and will never be forgotten.
