Winfred Hughes Cheek

BURLINGTON — Winfred Hughes Cheek, 93, of Burlington, North Carolina passed away at the home of his daughter on Friday, April 30, 2010. Winfred was a much-loved father, uncle, brother, friend and bass singer for the Stony Creek Presbyterian Church choir.
Winfred was born in Buckhorn, Orange County, North Carolina, to Enoch Lendo Cheek and Annie Cora Markham Cheek who preceded him in death, along with 3 brothers, Raymond Cheek, Lee Roy Cheek and Leonard Cheek and 3 sisters, Lyla Ruth Cheek Adamson, Gladys Poe Cheek Johnson and Audrey Beatrice Cheek. He was married to Bertha Macomson Cheek, deceased, and Margaret Cole Cheek, deceased.
Survivors include his daughter, Diane Cheek Norblad; son, Daniel Ward Cheek; sister, Margaret Lenora Cheek Neese; stepson John Cole; stepdaughters Phyllis Massey and Karen Bryant; as well as 3 grandchildren, Shannon Hughes Hall, Denise Diane Evans and Daniel Ward Cheek Jr. Also surviving are numerous stepgrandchildren, and great grandchildren along with beloved nieces and nephews.
Winfred was a World War II Army veteran who served with the 12 Armored Division 92nd Recon Battalion with Gen. George Patton’s Hellcat Division during the Battle of the Bulge, Colmar Pocket and Ardennes Forest in Europe.
    Winfred’s
greatest enjoyments were singing with a quartet and the Stony Creek Church choir, or rabbit and squirrel hunting with his nephews and friends from the Stony Creek community. He enjoyed the company of his family, including many special nieces and nephews, and was known for his wonderful dry wit.
He will be very much missed by his friends and family, but he has gone to be with all the singers in heaven.
The funeral will be held at 2:00 pm Monday, May 3, 2010 at Stony Creek Presbyterian Church by Rev. Kenneth Hickey. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 4-6 pm Sunday at Lowe Funeral Home & Crematory and other times at the home.
Memorials can be made to Stony Creek Presbyterian Church.
