Graham S. Kernodle

BURLINGTON — Graham S. Kernodle, 81, of 3707 Union Ridge Road, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002, after three months of failing
health and a critical illness of several days.

A native of Burlington, he was the husband of Virginia Roney Kernodle, who survives, and the son of the late Walter Graham Kernodle and Wyona Somers Kernodle. He graduated from Pleasant Grove High School in 1938 and served in the Army Air Corps During World War II.

He retired from Burlington Industries after 35 years of service.

He was a member of Union Ridge United Church of Christ, where he served faithfully and tirelessly. He was a past member of the Deacon Board and past chairman of the Official Board, and had served on numerous other boards. He was Father of the Year in 1977 and 1987.

His primary hobby was gardening, where he spent countless hours serving not his needs but the needs of others. Many people over the course of his lifetime would discover bags of fresh vegetables on their doorstep that he had personally delivered.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include two sons, Ronnie Kernodle of the home and Steve Kernodle and wife, Patti, of Greer, S.C.; grandchildren, Channa Kernodle of Greenville, S.C. and Shelly Thompson and husband, Michael, of Anderson, S.C.; and two brothers, Charles Donald Kernodle Sr. of Burlington and Alan D. Kernodle of Big Spring, Texas.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Eugenia K. Pattillo and Marjorie K. Hughes; and six brothers, Eldridge Kernodle, Richard Kernodle, Loftin Kernodle, Claude Kernodle, Raymond Kernodle, and Staley Kernodle.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Union Ridge United Church of Christ by the Rev. Phil Hardy, and the Rev. John Settlemyre. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the Union Ridge United Church of Christ Fellowship Hall from 6 to 8 this evening.
