Steve Ryan Kernodle
GREER, S.C. — The Fluor family lost a trusted friend and valued employee, Steve Ryan Kernodle, 58, on Wednesday, October 8, 2008, at his home surrounded by his family and friends, after a 16-month battle with cancer.
He was born December 9, 1949, in Burlington, N.C., the son of Virginia Roney Kernodle and the late Graham Somers Kernodle.
He graduated from Eastern Alamance High School in 1968, where he lettered in softball.
Steve joined Fluor in 1980 as a structural engineer after eight years with Brown and Root Inc. in Houston. Steve obtained a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from North Carolina State University in 1972 and his MBA from Clemson University in 1995. A Professional Engineer registered in 11 states, he contributed to Fluor through his work as a structural design engineer, principal structural engineer, project manager and director-structural engineering.
He will be remembered for his technical expertise, welcoming manner and enduring friendship.
He was a member of St. Giles Presbyterian Church. He served in the U.S. Air National Guard at Ellington Air Force Base in Houston, Texas from 1972-1978.
Steve enjoyed a variety of hobbies including photography, painting, archery, writing, gardening and jogging. He had a passion for life, a giving heart, and a gracious soul. He gave his time and knowledge to friends and strangers alike, always lending a helping hand. He was a dedicated husband and loving father. The world has lost a good man, and he will be dearly missed by all whose lives he touched.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Lake Kernodle; his daughters, Shelly Lynanne Kernodle Thompson and Shanna Leanne Kernodle; his brother, Ronnie Kernodle and his mother, Virginia Kernodle.
Visitation will be held at St. Giles Presbyterian Church from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, October 10, 2008.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 12, 2008, at Union Ridge Church in Burlington, N.C.
