Obituary
Janice Marie Makin Holt Cobb, 82, of Graham passed away Saturday, January 7, 2023 at Alamance Regional medical Center.
Mother's are special, angels in training, which describes my mother. She was a great mother and my best friend; I miss her tremendously. She was a great daughter, wife, sibling, friend, and mother-in-law; always happy to help in any way she could.
Born August 14, 1940 in Fayetteville, N.C to David Evander and Eloise Bertice Leonard Holt.,both deceased.; moved to Burlington in 1957.
She said attending Williams High School, 17 years old in a new city was intimidating. But, she had a great singing voice, which helped her connect with others. She quickly became Mr. Guthrie's(music teacher) pride and joy. She would sing in his school choirs and church choirs.
She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles very much, even at 82. I used to say, "My mother's like a walking dictionary." She would quickly correct her college graduate daughter of spelling errors, incorrect use of words and would spell/define/explain difficult words without hesitation.
She was, also, technically savy for an 82 year old; using her smartphone to text her daughter using emojis and search information using Google.
Enjoyed reading newspapers, Danielle Steele novels and Barbara Taylor Bradford novels. Enjoyed watching sports, movies, HGTV, Fox News and listening to Rush Limbaugh.
She was a great cook with restaurant worthy recipes; best ever chocolate pie and chocolate cake, addicting green punch, mouth-watering fried chicken which was everyone's favorite at church homecoming, sweet potato casserole, chicken casserole and stuffing which always required seconds.
She retired from Lucent(Western Electric) after 27 years of service.
Jan is survived by her daughter, Sherri Renee Makin Faircloth and husband Jeff. Siblings, David Eugene Holt (Gene), Michael Wayne Holt (Mike), Carol Ann Holt Long (Carol), Steven Craig Holt (Steve). First husband, Freddie Cobb.
Jan was preceded in death by her first husband, Arthur “Sonny’ Makin,Jr. and her second husband, Freddie Cobb.
She loved and treasured her granddogs; Alfie. Lynzie, Dottie and Dempsey.
My father passed away January 12, 1984. I have joy in knowing Mom is with Dad, again, in heaven, with no more worries or sickness.
