Mrs. Nellie Summers Nix
GIBSONVILLE — Mrs. Nellie Summers Nix, 80, of 6202 Bethel Church Road, died Monday, Aug. 20, 2001, at Cone Extended Care Center after eight months of failing health.
A native of Guilford County, she was the wife for 59 years of Mr. W. Fred Nix, who survives, and the daughter of Lacy Summers and Eugenia Brown Summers, both deceased.
She graduated from Gibsonville High School and attended St. Leo’s Nursing School in Greensboro.
She worked several years in the auditing department of Sears, Roebuck and Co. in Greensboro, and 14 years as a medical secretary and assistant to Dr. Prefontaine. She was a licensed real estate broker and owned Nellie Nix Realty in Gibsonville. Mrs. Nix retired in 1983.
She was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church and once was active in the Women of the Church holding various offices, and in the church choir. She was a past Worthy Matron of the Gibsonville Chapter of the Eastern Star, a member of the Home Demonstration Club in McLeansville for more than 41 years. She was a charter member of the Pansy Garden Club and was a charter and life member of the Guilford County Genealogical Society and former vice president of the North Carolina Genealogical Society. She was a member of the Guilford County Bicentennial Committee, which became the present Guilford County Joint Historic Preservation Commission.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include two sons, John W. Nix of Elon and Jerry S. Nix of Gibsonville; a son-in-law, Alton T. Barber of Gibsonville; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Elizabeth Summers of Greensboro; a brother-in-law, Henry Tickle of Gibsonville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Eugenia Ann Nix Barber; and seven sisters and brothers.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Bethel Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Ray Mims, pastor. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Bethel Presbyterian Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorials should be given to Bethel Presbyterian Church, c/o Session House Fund, 300 Knox Road, McLeansville, N.C. 27301.
