Son of Lelar Ward and Japheth Gerringer. Four children were born into his first marriage to Ruth Henson before it ended in divorce in 1968.
An edited extract of his obituary from the Greensboro Daily News, dated August 10, 1976, follows:
Cleo E. "Dobbie" Gerringer, 57, died Monday at Starmount Villa Nursing Ceneter. He was a native of Alamance County and had lived in Greensboro 25 years. A veteran of WW II, he was a carpenter with Love Construction Co.
Surviving are widow, Mrs Betty Smith Gerringer; sons, James Daniel, Cleo E. Jr. and Jerry Lane Gerringer; stepsons, Kenneth and Ronnie Chrisco; daughter, Mrs Ranell Chavis; stepdaughter, Mis Debra Chrisco; mother, Lelar W. Gerringer; sisters, Mrs Wade Hensley, Mrs Arthur Shoffner, Mrs Jack Lamar, Miss Margaret Gerringer. [11188]

Mrs. Ruth Henson Gerringer, 74, of 2402 Denver Drive, died June 11, 1996, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Forbis & Dick, North Elm Street Chapel. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Mrs. Gerringer was born in Guilford County. She was a retired employee of Cone Mills, White Oak division. She was a member of Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, and was in fellowship at Shannon Hills Bible Chapel. She was also a member of the Cone Club.
She is survived by her sons, Cleo 'Sonny' Gerringer, Jr., James Gerringer, and Jerry Gerringer, all of Greensboro; daughter, Ann Sharpe of Greensboro; eight grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, 900 Sixteenth St., Greensboro, N.C. 27405.
The family will receive friends at Forbis & Dick, North Elm Street Funeral Home tonight from 7-9 p.m., and other times at the home, 2402 Denver Drive.
