Veteran Leaf Auctioneer Succumbs
Edward C. Blanchard, 71, a tobacco auctioneer in Burlington for the past 30 years, died suddenly at his home at 1763 West Webb Avenue at 5 o'clock yesterday morning.
He was a native of Alamance County, son of the late Frederick and Rebecca Aldridge Blanchard. Before becoming a Burlington auctioneer, he was employed for 20 years by Taylor Tobacco Warehouse of Winston - Salem. He was a member of Shallowford Christian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Frances Patterson Blanchard of the home; four daughters, Mrs. Mable Barber of Route 2, Elon College, and Mrs. Robert Alexander, Mrs. Glynden Moore and Mrs. Keith Burke, all of Burlington; four sons, Clarence C. Blanchard, Howard E. Blanchard, Chester Blanchard and John K. Blanchard, all of Burlington; 14 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Bessie Tyndal of Burlington an one brother, B. F. Blanchard of Route 3, Burlington.
Final rites will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at Shallowford Christian Church. The service will be conducted by Rev. Richard Peterson, pastor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The body will remain at the home until taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes before the service.
Pallbearers will be Allen Blanchard, Curtis Blanchard, Fred Blanchard, Claude Perry, Archie Lineberry and 0. G. Yarbrough. Honorary pallbearers will be Shelton Coggins, Ed Underwood, Terry Smith, Glen McCray, Walter Huffman, Claude Cable, Freeman Woods, Billy Walker, Tom McAdams, Oscar Gammon, Elby Crouse, Hal Perkins and H. Chandler.
