Adrian W. Hoffman enlisted in the United States Army "for the duration of the War or other emergency, plus six months, subject to the discretion of the President or otherwise according to law" on March 9, 1943 at Camp Croft, South Carolina. He was a resident of North Carolina, which is also where he was born in 1924. He had completed two years of college, was single without dependents, 5'8" tall, weighing 129 lbs.
Staff Sergeant Hoffman, service number 34608821, was assigned as a tail gunner to the 853rd Bomber Squadron 491st Bomber Group, and killed in action on September 28, 1944. He was awarded the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters, and Purple Heart Medal and interred at Plot D Row 10 Grave 32 at the Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial, Margraten, Eijsden-Margraten Municipality, Limburg, Netherlands.

Burlington, North Carolina Daily Times News, November 27, 1944: Staff Sgt. Adrian Wendell Hoffman, son of Mr. and Mrs. A.G. Hoffman, Rte. 1, Burlington, was killed in action over Germany on Sept. 26, according to a report sent by the German government to the War Department. He had previously been reported as missing in action.
Staff Sgt. Hoffman was a gunner in a B-24 Liberator bomber stationed in England. He had been awarded the Air Medal and two Oak Leaf clusters. He was a graduate of Elon High School and was a sophomore at Elon College when he was called into the service in March, 1943. He received his basic training at Miami Beach and then attended gunnery school at Lowry Field, Colorado and Harlingen Field, Texas. He remained there for a short time as an instructor and then went to Biggs Field, Ft. Myers, Florida for additional training before his overseas assignment.
