Louis Hassell Joyce

MADISON — Louis Hassell Joyce, 96, formerly of Madison, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2008, at Countryside Manor.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 29, 2008, at Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church with the Rev. Harry Andrews and the Rev. LaNell Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Woodland Cemetery.
Louis was born in Bassett, Va., on Oct. 20, 1912, to John Walter and Daisy Dell Vernon Joyce. He graduated from Sandy Ridge High School in 1933. Following graduation, Louis held several positions at Moore Furniture Company until 1952, when he opened Joyce Furniture Company. He and his wife, Ruby, owned and managed the furniture store until his retirement in 1983. Louis was a founder and lifetime member of the Madison Merchants Association which later became the Western Rockingham Chamber of Commerce. He was a charter member of the Mt. Hermon Ruritan Club, member and past president of the Madison Rotary Club, and a member of the Southern Home Furnishings Association. After his retirement, Louis enjoyed socializing with local businesses as he distributed "The Messenger."
He joined Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church in 1947. He served as treasurer, chairperson of the Administrative Council and held many other positions during his years of membership. He loved his "special" Sunday school class that he taught for many years, and he always wanted what was best for Mt. Hermon’s growth financially and spiritually.
Above all, in addition to his church, Louis loved his family, socializing with everyone in town, and eating and carrying on with everyone at Fuzzy’s Bar-B-Que.
Everyone that knew Louis cared deeply and had great admiration for his love of life. Whether it was his family, friends, or his caretakers, everyone had affection for his sense of humor and love of family.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Morningview Assisted Living where he resided for three and half years and also to the staff at Countryside Manor where he had resided the past eight months.
In addition to his parents, Louis was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Ruby Robertson Joyce; son, Barry Louis Joyce; brothers, Harry, Carl, Forest, Durward and Charles Joyce; and sisters, Irene Dodson, Christine Moore, Ernestine Wall and Estelle Via.
Survivors include a brother, Jerome Joyce, of Mt. Airy; daughters, Kaye Cook and husband, Wayne, of Mayodan, and Donna Somers, of Burlington; daughter-in-law, Diane Joyce; grandchildren, Tonya Hudy (Ricky), Brian Joyce (Irene) and Jennifer Joyce; great-grandson, Marc Hudy (Brandi); great-greatgrandchildren, Lexi and Ava Hudy; and special friends, Lewis Barnes, Tamika Maynard and Nellie Hairston.
Louis lay in state from 3 to 7 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008, at Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church, 8011 N.C. 704, Madison. The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m.
Memorials may be made to Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church, 8011 N.C. 704, Madison, N.C. 27025 or to the Barry L. Joyce Local Cancer Support Fund, 141 St. Andrews Drive, Stoneville, N.C. 27048.
