Firefighter dies in head-on collision
Daniel Ray Leath described as a jovial, friendly leader
By Keren Rivas Times-News
keren_rivas@link.freedom.com A trip to the beach ended tragically for a volunteer firefighter when his Dodge pickup truck was hit head on.
N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper A.D. Wooten said Daniel Ray Leath , of Pagetown Road, Burlington, was traveling north on U.S. 15-501 on his way home when he was hit head on by a 2005 Lexus SUV that was traveling in the opposite direction.
Leath , 43, died at the scene from injuries suffered during the accident. A female passenger, Amanda K. Etchison, also of Burlington, was airlifted to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, Wooten said. Her condition was not known Saturday afternoon.
The accident happened at 11:17 p.m. Friday north of Walter Bright Road in Chatham County.
Wooten said the driver of the Lexus went off the road, hit a rail and then overcorrected crossing the center line and hitting Leath’s pickup truck head on.
The Lexus caught fire killing the driver, who has not been identified yet, Wooten said.
Wooten said two other motorists who were traveling northbound managed to pull Leath’s pickup truck away from the fire.
FOR ABOUT 10 years in the early 1980s and 1990s, Leath served as a volunteer firefighter for the Altamahaw-Ossipee Volunteer Fire Department, said Fire Chief Michael Barnette.
Two weeks ago, Barnette said, Leath had rejoined the department to be with his son, Justin, who had just graduated from Western Alamance High School and wanted to be a volunteer firefighter.
"Justin and Danny were more than father and son," Barnette said. "They were best friends."
Barnette said Leath and his girlfriend were on their way back from Myrtle Beach, where they had spent a couple of days with Justin, when the accident happened.
Barnette, who has known Leath all his life, described him as a friendly, jovial guy and a leader for the younger firefighters in the department.
"(They) really bonded with Danny ," Barnette said. "A lot of the younger guys are really upset about what has happened."
He added, "It is really tough."
ACCORDING TO HIS obituary, Leath worked for QI-Renn Building Products in Greensboro and attended Bethlehem Christian Church in Elon.
Wooten said they are still investigating whether alcohol or speed was a factor in the accident. The speed limit on that section of the road is 55 mph.
Visitation for Leath will be this afternoon from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory in Burlington. The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Bethlehem Christian Church.
