BURLINGTON — Iris Marie Shepherd Fonville Wingo , 85, of Sandy Cross Road passed away Friday, November 18, 2005 at Alamance Regional Medical Center after several years of failing health. She was born November 19, 1919 in Guilford County. The daughter of Marcia Gerringer and Byrd Shepherd , she was the wife of the late William J. Fonville and the late Charles Leroy Wingo . Iris was a member of Long’s Chapel Christian Church and graduated from Elon College in 1937 where she was chosen "Miss Elon". She married William J. Fonville, Sr. in 1938. He died September 16, 1961. She then married Charles L. Wingo in 1969 and moved to Newport News, Va.. In 1984 she moved to Florida where she lived until Charlie’s death in 1999. While in Florida she was a member of the Family and Community Education (FCE) Program. She served one year as the president.
Survivors include her daughter Marcia Fonville Cope and her husband Kenny of Canton, N.C., sons: William Jerry Fonville, Jr. of Burlington, Robert Shepherd Fonville and his wife Carmen of Newport News, Va., grandchildren: Belinda Fonville Beeson and her husband Bryan, Kelly Cope Hartzog and her husband Shawn, Shannon Cope Setzer and her husband Will, Jason, Benjamin, Matthew, and Karie Fonville, and great-grandchildren: Payton and Sayla Fonville, Zachary, Caroline, Sarah and Asher Hartzog, Austin and Weston Setzer. Her husbands, parents, an infant daughter Harriet Marie Fonville and a granddaughter Kimberly Fonville, preceded her in death.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Long’s Chapel Christian Church by Dr. James Baughn. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. today at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. and at other times at the home of Jerry Fonville, 1648 S. Fonville Rd., Burlington.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Long’s Chapel Christian Church, 2364 N. N.C. 49 Hwy., Mebane, NC 27302.
