BURLINGTON — Mr. C. Rainey Smith, 72, of 3973 Dr. Pickett Road,
died at 8:13 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Alamance Regional
Medical Center after several years of declining health.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Betty Lou
Smith, who survives, and the son of the late Henry Smith and Beatrice
Staley Smith. He was retired part owner, secretary and treasurer of
Hanford Brick Co. and was a member of Friendship United Methodist
Church. He was a U. S. Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in
the Underwater Demolition Team. He was a past member of the Board
of Directors of the Brick Association of North Carolina and an honorary
member of the North Carolina Highway Patrol. He was named
Alamance Civitan Citizen of the Year in 1990.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a son, Mr. Jeff Smith
and wife, Fran, of Burlington; and two grandsons, Brad and Will Smith
of Burlington.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Friendship United
Methodist Church by the Rev. Alvin M. Horne, pastor, and the Rev.
Bennie Smith, pastor of Staley Memorial Baptist Church. Mr. Smith will
lie in state at the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will be in
the church cemetery.
The family will be at the Rich & Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from
6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the residence.
