H.W. Mann
BURLINGTON — H. W. Mann, 76, of 1605 Gerringer Mill Road, died on Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at UNC Hospitals after several years failing health and one month of critical illness. He was a native of Guilford County and the son of the late Ernest Samuel and Leola Hancock Mann. He was the husband for over 54 years of Rebecca "Becky" Southard Mann who survives.
H. W. attended Zion Christian Church and worked for several years as a dispatcher with the Burlington and Gibsonville Police Departments. He was a retired Sergeant First Class with the U.S. Army following 21 years and six months of honorable service. He began his military career as a Paratrooper with the 82 nd Airborne Division in the 325 th Medical Company stationed at Ft. Bragg, N.C. He was later deployed to Korea and served with the 24 th Medical Battalion during the Korean Conflict. Sergeant Mann continued his military training with several Medical Units, deploying to Asia during the Vietnam War as a Medical Specialist with the 447 th Medical Detachment. He finished his tour of duty and served out the remainder of his career as a Platoon Sergeant with Company A, 1 st Battalion. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and he enjoyed all kinds of sports.
Survivors include his wife of the home; sons and daughtersin-law, Gary and Carolyn Mann of Taylorsville, Roger Mann, Michael and Dianne Mann, all of Burlington; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-inlaw, Aezelia and Tom King of Gibsonville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Thomas and Georgia Mann of Burlington, Harvey and Carmel Mann of McLeansville; and a sister-inlaw, Margaret Mann of Burlington. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Ronald Wayne Mann.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 22, 2004, at the Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. George M. "Jack" Phillips Jr., and the Rev. Bennie Smith. The service will continue at Alamance Memorial Park with full military honors. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 this evening at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
