Rembert James Reynolds
ORANGEBURG, S.C. — Rembert James "RJ" Reynolds , 91, passed away at his home in Orangeburg on July 31, 2006. Born on June 15, 1915, in Gainesville, Georgia, he was the only son of Eunice Gabriel and William B. Reynolds.
He was the valedictorian of the Great Falls High School Class of 1933 and graduated from Clemson College in 1938 with a bachelor of science degree in textile chemistry.
On December 25, 1941, he married Hazel Neal of Greensboro, North Carolina. During World War II, he was stationed at Fort Jackson in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1945. Mr. Reynolds was a dye house manager for Burlington Mills and later a co-founder of Webco Mills in Burlington, North Carolina. He was a respected management consultant for numerous textile mills located in North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and South Carolina. Mr. Reynolds retired in Orangeburg in 1974.
He often said it was his life after retirement that brought him the most joy. He loved spending time with his grandsons and was an accomplished and generous gardener. Mr. Reynolds was a dedicated member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church. He served on numerous committees, taught Sunday school and was a member of the Intercessory Prayer and Bible Study group. He was a frequent delegate to The South Carolina Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church. His church family was the cornerstone of his Christian life. In 2005, the church recognized his dedicated service by awarding him a lifetime honorary membership on the Church Council. Mr. Reynolds was the oldest male member of the congregation.
Mr. Reynolds had a keen mind, loved a good joke and people. RJ never met a stranger.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel Neal Reynolds ; a son and daughter-in-law, Rembert Neal Reynolds , M.D. and Mary Jane Reynolds of Columbia, South Carolina; a daughter and son-in-law, Margaret Ann Reynolds Waddell and James Brock Waddell of Elon, North Carolina; three grandsons, Rembert Neal Reynolds Jr. of New York City, John Luke Reynolds of Columbia, South Carolina, and Nathaniel Long Reynolds of Washington, D.C.; one sister, Nadine Reynolds McKeown of Rainbow City, Alabama.
He was predeceased by a sister, Willene Reynolds Coward of Great Falls, South Carolina.
A memorial service conducted by the Rev. Will Brown will be held today, August 1, 2006, at 4 p.m. at St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Orangeburg, South Carolina.
Visitation will follow in the church fellowship hall. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Greensboro, North Carolina on August 2, 2006, at 3 p.m.
