Dexter Raymond Barbee, 81, of 127 Meadowood Drive, Burlington passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his children on Sunday, August 29, 2021.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of the late Joan McIntyre Barbee and the son of Marvin “Red” Barbee and Gladys Vaughn Barbee both deceased.
Dexter is survived by his sons Dexter Barbee Jr., Greg Scott and wife Susie, daughter Tisha Barbee Mansfield and husband Brent, brother Jerry Barbee and wife Joan, grandchildren, Dustin K. Barbee, Travis L. Barbee, Ben Scott and wife Amber, Paul Jollay and wife Ashli, Josie Brooke Mansfield, Nora Blair Mansfield, one great-grandchild Bailey Jollay and four nieces.
Dexter was a devoted Christian, a committed family man, and a widely-acclaimed businessman. A graduate of Elon University (College at the time) with a double major in Biology and Chemistry. He founded Apollo Chemical Corporation in 1968 where he served as President and CEO and the corporation was successfully operational for forty years. Dexter was nominated for Entrepreneur of the Year in 1996 by the Alamance County Chamber of Commerce. He continued involvement in family businesses Barbee Holdings, Barbee Properties and DGT Properties.
He was a lifelong member of Faith United Methodist Church where he held many leadership positions throughout the years including Chairman of Administrative Council, President of United Methodist Men and Sunday School Teacher.
Dexter was a proud supporter of the community offering his services and financial support throughout his life. He was a proud supporter of The Burlington School for many years. He served as President of the Alamance Breakfast Rotary Club, was a Paul Harris Fellow and had a significant role in establishing the handicap accessible playground at Joe C. Davidson Park. He served on the Board of Directors at MidCarolina Bank. In 2019, Duke University welcomed Dexter into the James B. Duke Society for his support of higher education and medicine. He served on the Board of Directors of Elon Homes for Children and Chairman for the Christian Business Men’s Committee. Dexter was a supporter and fan of the Carolina Panthers, the North Carolina State Wolfpack and Elon University.
Other interests that brought Dexter much happiness included spending time with his family, mentoring young entrepreneurs, classic cars, and long conversations with friends while dining at the Burch Bridge Café.
The family of Dexter Barbee are truly thankful for all of the family and friends who have surrounded them with love and prayer during this time of their loss.
Visitation will be held at Rich and Thompson Funeral Service, Burlington from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Thursday, September 2, 2021.
A Celebration of the life of Dexter R. Barbee will be held at Faith United Methodist Church at 2:00 PM on Friday, September 3, 2021.
Committal Service will follow at Alamance Memorial Park.
