ELON — Mr. Herman Lee Swift, 98, of Elon, died at the Hospice Home in Burlington on Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at 4:40 a.m. following several weeks of critical illness.
A native of Caswell County, he was the husband of the late Erma Susan Terrell Swift and the son of Robert Hawkins Swift and Huldah Smith Swift, both deceased. He retired as maintenance manager of Meville Plastics. He was a lifetime member of Woodmen of the World and a charter member of Midwest Tool Collectors Association. Herman was a member of the First Christian United Church of Christ where he was on the Board of Trustees and a former deacon.
Survivors include his daughter, Vickie S. Hodge and husband Barry of Elon; son, Gene Swift and wife Donna of Elon; eight grandchildren, Tamara Swift of Raleigh, Jason Swift of Plymouth, N.H., Kenneth Swift and wife Jennifer of Thomasville, Nicole Hodge Carroll and husband Tim of Raleigh, Kara Hodge Marshall and husband Jon of Burlington, Jodi Isley of Swepsonville, Eric Isley of Snow Camp and Kim Gentle and husband Joe of Statesville; five greatgrandchildren; brothers, Robert W. Swift and wife Ruby of Caswell County and John Herbert Swift and wife Marie of Elon; and son-in-law, Tony Isley of Snow Camp.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Rebecca S. Isley; sister, Alice S. Strickland; and brother, Clyde E. Swift.
The funeral service will be conducted in the Rich & Thompson Chapel in Burlington on Friday, August 3, 2012 at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Mark H. Pickett. Burial will follow in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the Rich & Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. At other times they will be at the residence of the son, Gene Swift, 738 East Haggard Avenue, Elon, N.C.
The family requests that memorials be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215.
