BURLINGTON, N.C. — Jim Gooch, 78, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Dec. 21, 2012 at the Hospice Home surrounded by his family.
He was a native of Durham County and the husband of 58 years to the late Betty McAlister Gooch.
Jim and his wife owned and operated Faith Book and Bridal Nook at Cum-Park Plaza for over 18 years. He was also a U.S. Army veteran. Jim received his undergraduate degree and pharmacy degree from UNC-Chapel Hill. Jim was a pharmacist at K-Mart for 17-1/2 years and a member of Harvest Baptist Church and the Basics Sunday School Class. He served as a deacon at Harvest Baptist Church and participated in church mission trips to Jamaica and Virginia.
Jim was a Junior Olympics championship swimmer and diver. He also received many medals in the Senior Games in swimming. He coached his sons’ soccer and basketball teams over the years. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Survivors include his sons, James Michael Gooch and wife JodieofCharleston, S.C., Steven Martin Gooch and wife Wendy of Burlington and Patrick Neil Gooch and wife Nikki of Burlington; grandchildren, Joy, Andrew, Bethany, Gabe, Olivia and Jaden Gooch;
niece, Terry Lynn McAlister
of Southport, N.C.; and a sister, Virginia Sessoms of Cary, N.C.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents, James Haywood and Katherine Elizabeth Wright Gooch; and a sister, Bootsy Yates.
A service to celebrate his life will be held on Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Harvest Baptist Church by Pastor Larry Lamberth, assisted by Walter Webster. Burial will follow at Graham Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 p.m. on Saturday at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory and at other times at the home.
