GIBSONVILLE — Thelma Mayberry Barber was born May 14, 1916 in Virginia. She married Virgil Vance Barber in 1934, and they had been married 73 years when he died in 2007. Mr. and Mrs. Barber worked together on their farm growing tobacco, produce and crops needed to support livestock. She enjoyed sharing vegetables grown in her garden and home cooked foods with family and friends. Mrs. Barber also enjoyed baking, and often made cakes and cookies to give to others; at age 85 she made her granddaughter’s wedding cake. Mrs. Barber enjoyed reading and studying the Bible. She was a former children’s Sunday school teacher, and member of Brown Wesleyan Church, Gibsonville.
Mrs. Barber was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Vance Barber, and her son in-law, Carl D. Whitesell. She is survived by one daughter, Amy Barber Whitesell of Gibsonville and one granddaughter, Carla (James) Whitesell-Dahl of El Paso, Texas; two sisters, Mrs. Ilene Mckinney of Greensboro, N.C. and Mrs. Lillian Lewey of Gretna, Virginia and several nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Twin Lakes Retirement Community for their care and support over the past five years; Dr. Nancy Maloney, and the many friends who have visited, sent cards, called or kept Mrs. Barber in your thoughts and prayers.
The funeral will be held on Saturday March 6, 2010 at the Twin Lakes Community Chapel at 11 a.m. by Dr. Mark Menees, Dr. Angela Marlowe and the Rev. Jonathan Marlowe, and visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the chapel. Interment will follow at the Gibsonville City Cemetery.
