JACOB MESSLER

Many friends throughout the county will regret to learn of the death of Jacob Messler, which occurred at his home in this city on Sunday night, May 16, 1915, at eleven o'clock, after an illness of several months with heart trouble and a complication of diseases.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Theodore Azman, were held at the family residence Tuesday morning at eleven o'clock, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Chariton cemetery.

Jacob Messler was born in Germany, on June 4, 1843. He came with his parents to America when he was about sixteen years of age and settled on a farm in Marion county, Iowa, where he resided until 1870, when he removed to Cloud where he lived until 1910, when he located on a farm in Lincoln township, this county, where he resided until two years ago, when he came to Chariton and this place has since been his home.

He was married on his farm in Marion county, on August 28, 1865, to Miss Sarah Beckman, of Cincinnati, Ohio, who survives him. To them nine children were born, one of whom, Jacob, died in infancy and a daughter, Mrs. Lloyd Badger, passed away in October, 1912.

Those living are Mrs. Kate Willis, of Lacona; Mrs. Louisa Nussbaum, of Oakley; Mrs. Stella Rouse, of Lucas; Mrs. Lola Selby, of Des Moines; John W. Messler, Mrs. Jennie Badger and Mrs. Elizabeth Preston, of Chariton. He is also survived by nineteen grandchildren.

When quite young Mr. Messler was converted and united with the Lutheran church, but later he transferred his membership to the Union Chapel, of the M. E. denomination, which was located near his home.

Mr. Messler was a good citizen, one who enjoyed the confidence and esteem of all who knew him. He was honest and upright, a kind father and a splendid neighbor, and his demise will be mourned by all who knew him. The sympathy of the community will go out to the grief stricken family.
