MRS. SARAH A. MESSLER

Mrs. Sarah A. Messler, pioneer Iowa lady and well known in this vicinity, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Preston, in Chariton, on Thursday evening, June 10, 1937, at the age of 91 years and 5 months.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Paul H. Hicks, of the Methodist church, were held at the Beardsley funeral home Sunday afternoon, and burial was in the Chariton cemetery. The floral tributes were profuse and beautiful, and bore testimony to the high regard in which she was held as well as sympathy for the children and other relatives left in bereavement.

Sarah Ann Beckman was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on January 11, 1846. At the age of nineteen years she came to Iowa with her parents, locating on a farm west of Dallas.

In 1865 she was married at Knoxville, Iowa, to Jacob Messler, who preceded her in death on May 16, 1915. To this union nine children were born, six of whom survive her. One daughter, Mrs. Lola Selby, of Des Moines, died but a few weeks ago. Mrs. Messler also reared one grandson, Jess Smith, now of Galesburg, Ill.

Mrs. Messler united with the Methodist church when a young woman and was ever faithful to her Christ and church, taking an active part in the work of the church as long as her health permitted. She had been confined to her bed and wheelchair for the past four years, but never complained and was an inspiration to everyone who called on her. Her Bible was her faithful companion and she found a great deal of comfort from its pages.

She leaves to mourn her passing, six children, Mrs. Kathryn Willis, of Lacona; Mrs. Louisa Nussbaum, of Oakley; John Messler, of Osceola; Mrs. Estella Rouse, of Lucas; Mrs. Jennie Badger and Mrs. Elizabeth Preston, both of Chariton. There are also nineteen grandchildren and one great grandchild, other relatives and a host of friends.
