Thomas Elbert Gilliam
ELON COLLEGE—Thomas Elbert Gilliam, 67, of Route 1, Elon College, died yesterday afternoon at 4:20 o'clock in a Burlington hospital after two weeks of critical illness. He had been in failing health for several years.
A native of Alamance County he had been a merchant in Gibsonville for over 20 years. As owner of T. E. Gilliam Grocer there, he operated the store until about two years ago, when his son, T. E. Gilliam Jr., took over the management.
He was the husband of Mrs. Nettie Oliver Gilliam, who survives, and was the son of the late Joseph H. and Mrs. Susan Wilkins Gilliam.
He was a member of Elon College Community Church, where he served as a deacon.
Surviving with his wife are five daughters, Mrs. Howard Loy of Route 1, Elon College; Mrs. Nat T. Harris Burlington, Mrs. Pauline Melton of Durham, Mrs. George G. Shackleford Jr. of Mebane and Mrs. V. W. Cobb Jr. of Route 1, Gibsonville; three sons, J. Oliver Gilliam and Thomas E. Gilliam Jr., both of Burlington, and John H. Gilliam of Knoxville, Tenn.; one sister, Mrs. Alvis Jones of Burlington; and 20 grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock at Elon College Community Church by the pastor, Dr. W. J. Andes.
The body was taken to the home this afternoon at 2 o'clock to remain until taken to the church lo lie in state for 30 minutes prior to the funeral.
Pallbearers will be J. Oliver Gilliam Jr., Nat T. Harris Jr., William R. Melton, Harold R. Faulkner, C. H. Gilliam and E. B. Oakley.
