John Covington Vest, 80, died Saturday, May 17, 1958, at his home.
He is survived by his wife, Julia Thompson Vest; four sons, James J. Vest, Luther Powell Vest, Ross M. Vest, all of White Gate, John C. Vest, Jr., Pembroke; six daughters, Mrs. Walter Stafford, Mrs. Donald Stewart, Trigg, Mrs. John Melvin, Mechanicsburg, Mrs. Stuart Blackburn, Pulaski, Mrs. Howard Wheeling, Dublin, Mrs. W. A. Buchanan, Bluefield; a brother, Sam Vest, White Gate; three sisters, Mrs. J. L. Johnston, Trigg, Mrs. C. L. Peters, Louisa, Mrs. Sidney Underwood, Poplar Hill; 25 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 2:00 P.M. Monday in Mt. Zion Methodist Church with burial in Stinson Cemetery, White Gate. The body will remain at the funeral home until 1:00 P.M. on Monday.

Obituary-DEATH OF MRS. NELLIE G. VEST
Mrs. Nellie G. Vest, wife of John C. Vest, was born November 8, 1881, died at her home near White Gate, Giles County, Va., Dec. 30th, 1905
For nine months she lingered with the dreadful disease consumption. Her sufferings were great and during all those dreadful days and nights, she never became impatient, but being a true Christian heroine, she faced the last enemy without a fear. She was cheerful and pleasant at all times, and passed through the Dark Valley with a sweet smile on her face.
Nellie was only a little girl when she gave her heart to Jesus and after that lived a beautiful and consecrated life through sunshine and shadow. She was a devoted wife and loving mother; her sweet songs and prayers made home a dwelling place for angels. Just a few days before she died, her brother Daily Stafford, came to see her, and she asked him to sing her two favorite songs namely: "We are on the stormy side" and "Will there be any stars in my crown?". As the last song was sung, she got very happy, and said that her father and sisters who had died a few years ago had come to her and that the Beautiful Gate was open to receive her into the City. A little while before she passed away, she called her friends to her bedside and laid out her poor withered arm to her dear husband, and bade him goodbye and asked him to meet her in heaven; then one by one told her friends farewell; and last of all when her little baby, just one year old, was brought to her and with a dying mother's gaze, she looked at it for the last time and reached forth her hand and touched it, and gave it her last sweet smile on earth. So Nellie folded up her arms and the Death Angel came and kissed away her soul and bore it to the Paradise of God.
She leaves a devoted husband and a little baby, an aged mother, two sisters, and four brothers to mourn their loss. She was buried at Wesley's Chapel, the old family grave yard on the last day of 1905, to await the resurrection of the just. [51637]

PRETTY HOME WEDDING
At three o'clock Wednesday, July 24, at the residence of the bride's parents (Mr. & Mrs. Martin L. Thompson) quite an interesting wedding took place when Mr. John Vest led to the altar Miss Julia Thompson, the attractive daughter of our well known citizen, M. L. Thompson. The attendees were Misses Pearl Vest, Maggie Thompson, and Sallie Stinson, Messrs. Andrew Thompson, Lawrence Vest, and Tom Wiley, Rev. Jordan officiating in his usual impressive manner. The bride looked charming in a handsome blue silk gown, and carried white roses. After the wedding, the bridal party repaired to the dining room where an elegant supper was served. The menu and decorations reflected much credit to the ladies who assisted, and the entire party of seventy guests were sumptuously served. Quite a number of handsome and useful presents were received but time will not allow further comment on these. The bridal party left Thursday afternoon for Dublin where Mr. and Mrs. Vest and Maggie Thompson took the train for Lynchburg, returning the following Sunday. On Monday a reception was given in their honor at the home of the groom's father, Mr. Calvin Vest. Mr. and Mrs. Vest will reside in Vivian, WVa., and the good wishes of their many friends follow them to their new home.

Vest, Jr. of Pembroke; five daughters, Mrs. Stuart Blackburn of Pulaski, Mrs. Walter Stafford of Staffordsville, Mrs. James King of Pulaski, Mrs. John Melvin of Mechanicsburg, Va. and Mrs. Donald Stewart of Pearisburg; and one step-daughter, Mrs. W. A. Buchanan of Bluefield, Va. Funeral services were Sunday at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church with Rev. Kenneth Jones and Rev. Earnest Chinnault officiating. Burial will be in the Stinson Cemetery.
