CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Vernon A. Whitesell , 84, passed away Sunday, October 7, 2007, in Chesapeake, Virginia.
Born in Alamance County, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Frank and Ozella Whitesell .
He was predeceased by his loving wife of 55 years, Lucy Shaw Whitesell , and a daughter, Amanda W. Houchens.
He was a member of Jonesboro Baptist Church and past member of Raleigh Heights Baptist Church. Vernon was a Specialist Welder at Norshipco.
After his retirement, he and Lucy fulfilled their lifelong dream of building a home in the Blue Ridge Mountains. In 2003, Vernon and Lucy moved back to Chesapeake to be close to their family.
Survivors include his son, V. Lynn Whitesell and wife, Karen, of Chesapeake, Va.; three grandchildren, Kolby Whitesell , Evan Whitesell and Lauren Houchens; two stepgrandchildren, Samantha Yates and Tyler Yates; a brother, Odell Whitesell of Laguna Hills, Calif.; and dear friends, Don and Becky Buma.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 10, 2007, at the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake, Va. 23322. The Rev. Henry V. Napier will officiate.
The interment will follow in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home.
