Lucy Shaw Whitesell 
    CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Lucy Shaw Whitesell , 73, of Middle Oaks Drive, Chesapeake, passed away Wednesday, May 11, 2005, in Chesapeake.
    Born in West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Flossie Shaw , and was preceded in death by her daughter, Amanda Houchens; and brother, Lewis Shaw . Lucy  raised her family and lived in Chesapeake. She was an active member of Raleigh Heights Baptist Church. She retired from Smith and Welton Department Store in Great Bridge. After her retirement, she and her husband, Vernon, fulfilled their lifelong dream of building a home in the Blue Ridge Mountains. After 13 years, Lucy  and Vernon moved back to Chesapeake to be close to their family. Lucy  will be remembered for her strong will and determination and for being a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.
    Survivors include a loving husband of 55 years, Vernon A. Whitesell  of Chesapeake; her son, V. Lynn Whitesell  and wife, Karen, of Chesapeake; three grandchildren, Kolby Whitesell , Evan Whitesell , and Lauren Houchens; two stepgrandchildren, Samantha Yates and Tyler Yates; sisters, Donna Frye, Sara Young, Mary Lee Moore, Sandra Dodson, Ann Grigsby and husband, Jim; brothers, James W. Shaw  and wife, Peggy, Carl F. Shaw  Jr., and Tommy Shaw  and wife, Brenda.
    The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, May 16, 2005, at the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake. The Rev. Henry V. Napier will officiate. The interment will follow in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens.
    The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
    Memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia Society of America, Virginia Chapter, 2101 Executive Drive, Box 21, Hampton, Va. 23666.
