Mr. Melvin Reaves Stratton
CHERRYVILLE — Mr. Melvin Reaves Stratton, 91, of 7421 Flay Road, died at 6:35 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, 2003 at Gaston Memorial Hospital after several months of failing health. He was formerly of 1334 Graham St., Burlington. Mr. Stratton has gone to meet his Lord after faithful service since his youth. He served the Lord in various capacities, including Sunday School Superindendent, and a lifelong Deacon at Glen Hope Baptist Church and Eastlawn Baptist Church. He was also an R.A. leader and a Sunday School teacher. His wife, Martha, was his bride for 69 years and 6 months. Mr. Stratton founded M.R. Stratton Floor Sanding and Finishing, and retired after 47 years. His son Roger now owns and operates the business. Survivors other than his wife, Martha Ellen Sharpe Stratton, of the home, include a daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Joan Sherrill Pennell and the Rev. Ray Pennell of Cherryville; a son and daughter-in-law, Mr. Roger Dean Stratton and Mrs. Linda Stratton of Greensboro; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Abraham Lincoln Stratton and Sallie Bird Woodall Stratton; and a daughter, Mrs. Ginger Gail Stratton Somers. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Eastlawn Baptist Church by the Rev. Terry Pritchard, church pastor, and the Rev. Ray Pennell, pastor of Northbrook Baptist Church in Cherryville. Burial will follow in Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the McClure Funeral Home in Graham from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at 1334 Graham St., Burlington. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Eastlawn Baptist Church, 432 N. Sellars Mill Road, Burlington, N.C. 27217.3, Mr. Melvin Reaves Stratton
