2 city workers found dead By Alice Shelton Times-News

WHITSETT — A father and son from Gibsonville who were helping to install a water line for the City of Burlington were found dead Friday morning in a manhole. David Michael and his son, Christopher Michael, were discovered by relatives at a construction site near the intersection of U.S. 70 and N.C. 100 in Whitsett, according to a spokesman for the Guilford County Sheriff’s Department. Sheriff’s deputies and relatives were in the area searching for the pair. The two men were last seen about 8 p.m. Thursday and were the last workers at the site, the spokesman said. They were reported missing by David Michael’s wife. “David and Chris were really nice people,” said Jim Lauritsen, city engineer for Burlington. “This is all very sad.” The men were working for a subcontractor for Paul Howard Construction Co., which is installing a 24-inch water line from Burlington to Greensboro. Work on that line is almost complete with all the pipe in the ground, he said. “This is so awful,” said Harold Owen, Burlington’s city manager. “Our sympathies go to the families.” Guilford County is continuing its investigation and federal Occupational Safety and Health Administrators investigators were on the scene Friday. The bodies have been sent to the medical examiner’s office for autopsies. 132

Lack of oxygen killed workers

By Brent Lancaster Times-News
A father and son who died at a construction site in Whitsett in early July suffocated, according to the state medical examiner’s office.
David Michael , 52, and his son, Christopher Michael , 30, died of asphyxia environmental hypoxia, or suffocation, according to Dr. Aaron Gleckman.
No traces of hazardous chemicals or gases were found in the men’s bodies and there was no sign of trauma. But Gleckman said if the men inhaled a hazardous gas, it would be difficult to detect it from an autopsy.
Relatives found the two Gibsonville men in a vault on the construction site Friday morning, July 4. They were working for a subcontractor for Paul Howard Construction Co. on a project extending a water line for the city of Burlington to connect with Greensboro’s municipal water system and serve newly annexed Burlington residents in eastern Guilford County.
They were the last workers at the site that Thursday evening and were apparently checking a section of water line when last seen at 8 p.m.
The N.C. Department of Labor is investigating the men’s deaths, but has not issued a report and would not comment on the investigation until a report is complete.
Part of that investigation included taking air samples from the vault.
Guilford County Sheriff ’s Department investigators do not suspect foul play and the autopsies conducted at the medical examiner’s office in Chapel Hill found no evidence of it.
