Lorraine Whitfield Gerringer Matkins
 
 ELON — Mrs. Lorraine Whitfield Gerringer Matkins, age 90, of Elon, passed away on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at Alamance Regional Medical Center surrounded by her loving family.
 
 Born in Person County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Lester Ezra Whitfield and the late Maggie Long Whitfield and was married to “J.C.” Matkins, who survives. She retired from a career in the garment industry and was a longtime member of Shallow Ford Christian Church, where she was involved in the Women’s Fellowship and several other church organizations. Lorraine left a wonderful legacy of love and laughter and was a creative and industrious woman. She was devoted to her family and friends and loved being a mother, wife and sister. Lorraine enjoyed music, flowers, animals and all of God’s creations. An attitude of optimism and embracing each day was always evident in her smile.
 
 Mrs. Matkins is survived by her two daughters, Terry Ciccone and her husband, Gary, of Fayetteville and Connie Smithwick and her husband, Terry, of Bath, NC; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; five sisters, Beatrice Jenkins, Katye Newton and Sadie Roach, all of Burlington, Jean Walker of Longhurst, NC, Linda Faye Allen and her husband, Woody, of Elon; brothers, Herbert Whitfield and his wife, Nancy, and Herman Whitfield and his wife, Carol, all of Burlington; sisters-inlaw, Mary Lou Whitfield of Graham, Gloria Whitfield of Haw River and Ruth Thompson of Elon; and extended children, James A. Matkins and John “Eddie” Matkins and his wife, Nettie. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Everette R. Gerringer; parents; four sisters, Ethel Whitfield, Mae Lowe, Doris Coleman and Frances Barber; and two brothers, Raymond and Melvin Whitfield.
 
 A service to celebrate her life will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at Shallow Ford Christian Church by Rev. Steve Regan. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00-1:45 Tuesday at the church prior to the service and other times at the residence.
 
 The family would like to extend a special thanks to her beloved primary caregiver, Rhonda Walker, and also recognize Denise Turner, Robin Cain, and Stella and Yasha Worth for the loving care and kindness shown to Lorraine.

Mr. Everette Gerringer
BURLINGTON — Mr. Everette R. Gerringer, 76, of 725 Porterfield Drive, died Saturday, July 31, 1999, at his home
after four months of failing health.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Lorraine Whitfield Gerringer, who survives, and the son of Mr.
Lyman David Gerringer and Mrs. Fannie Ross Gerringer, both deceased. He was the retired part owner of Eric Inc. He was
a Navy Veteran of World War II. He was a member of Shallow Ford United Church of Christ, where he has served as a
deacon and trustee.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two daughters, Mrs. Terry Gerringer Ciccone of Fayetteville and Mrs.
Connie Gerringer Smithwick of Washington, D.C.; three sisters, Mrs. Eva Wyrick and Mrs. Ruth Thompson, both of
Burlington, and Mrs. Ethel Cable of Elon College; two brothers, Mr. Boyd Gerringer and Mr. L.D. Gerringer, both of
Burlington; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Marvin Gerringer.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Shallow Ford United Church of Christ by the Rev. Phil Hardy, pastor
of Union Ridge United Church of Christ, and Layman Boyd Sutton of Shallow Ford United Church of Christ. The body
will be at the funeral home until 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening and at other times at the home.

John C. Matkins Jr.
 

 
 BURLINGTON — John Calvin “J.C.” Matkins, Jr., 92, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, November 4, 2015, at Alamance Regional Medical Center. He was born in Alamance County on July 10, 1923, to the late John Calvin and Ora Gilliam Matkins Sr. and was the husband of the late LaMonna Brown Matkins and the late Lorraine Gerringer Matkins.
 
 John was a lifetime member of Shallow Ford Christian Church where he served as Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent, Deacon, Trustee and was a member of the choir. He enjoyed spending his free time hunting, gardening and playing golf.
 
 He is survived by his sons, James A. “Jim” Matkins of Burlington, John E. Matkins and wife Nettie of Columbia, SC; grandchildren, Lisa Cerak and husband John, Jeff Matkins, John T. “Tim” Hensley and wife Teresa, Patrick Ryan and wife Angela, Ronald A. “Andy” and wife Dawn; great-grandchildren, Brooke and Mallory Cerak, Tara, Christopher, Taylor, Tyler, Mati and Gracie Hensley; four great-great-grandchildren; brother, Joseph F. Matkins and wife Bernice; sister, Mildred Troxler Garrison and husband William “Bill”; sonin-law, Ronnie Hensley and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife, LaMonna Brown Matkins and Lorraine Gerringer Matkins; daughter, Sandra Matkins Hensley; his parents; brother, George W. Matkins and a sister-in-law, Patsy Matkins.
 
 The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, November 8, 2015, at Shallow Ford Christian Church by Pastor Steve Regan with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3-5 p.m. on Saturday at Lowe Funeral Home & Crematory and other times at the residence.
