Harrell Dean Leonard
   BURLINGTON — Harrell Dean Leonard, age 79, of Mine Creek Road, passed away Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at Hospice Home.

   A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Nancy Danieley Leonard and son of the late Lafayette and Mary Clapp Leonard. Harrell was retired from the N.C. DOT Rail Division and Lance, Inc. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during the Korean Conflict. He attended Alexander Wilson High School where he played football and baseball. He was a member of the “Overall Boys” team who won the junior baseball state championship. He later played semi-pro baseball and also played baseball during his Navy career. In recent years he could usually be found on the golf course.

   Survivors include his wife, Nancy Danieley Leonard, of the home; daughters, Amy L. Walker and husband Doug of Burlington and Jan Carter of Graham; grandchildren, Scotty Brown, Hannah Walker and Andy Walker; sister, Pam Braxton and husband Billy, of Graham; and brother-in-law, RoyceWilliams of Graham; his special nephew, Jason Danieley; and his special friend, “Buddy.”

   He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Vickie Teague; and sisters, Frances Wilkerson and Charlotte Williams.

   Funeral services will be conducted

   at 11 a.m. Friday, December 10, 2010 in the Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Dr. J. Earl Danieley and the Rev. Donald Swinney. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park. Mr. Leonard will remain at Lowe Funeral Home through the funeral service.

   The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 until 7 p.m. Thursday and at other times at the residence.

   Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, N.C. 27215 or to Alzheimer’s Association, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, N.C. 28215.
